| 4:28 am | Mike and Titania's Information About Viruses When a virus infects a cell, the virus forces it to make thousands more viruses. It does this by making the cell copy the virus's DNA or RNA, making viral proteins, which all assemble to form new virus particles. There are six basic, overlapping stages in the life cycle of viruses in living cells: * Attachment is the binding of the virus to specific molecules on the surface of the cell. * Penetration follows attachment; viruses penetrate the host cell * Uncoating happens inside the cell when the viral capsid is removed, thereby exposing the viral nucleic acid. * Replication of virus particles is the stage where a cell uses viral messenger RNA in its protein synthesis systems to produce viral proteins. * Assembly takes place in the cell when the newly created viral proteins and nucleic acid combine to form hundreds of new virus particles. * Release occurs when the new viruses escape or are released from the cell. Vaccination is a way of preventing diseases caused by viruses. Vaccines simulate a natural infection and its associated immune response, but do not cause the disease. Vaccines may consist of either live or killed viruses. In the generic sense, the process of artificial induction of immunity, in an effort to protect against infectious disease, works by 'priming' the immune system with an 'immunogen'. Stimulating immune response, via use of an infectious agent, is known as immunization. |

Maybe we can ice one of the hallways and start a hockey league? Seriously people, we need to get off our bums! Updated So far, we have dance club, water polo (in the pool provided by the brothers Weasley), self defense, floor ball, ping pong, and mutant indoor quodpot/ dodgeball. Anything else? So far, self-defense sounds most popular. |
